Skin Tips:  How to protect against sun damage

  1. Wear sunscreen every day of the year
Choose sunscreen with a sun protection factor (SPF) of 30 or higher. And if it stings or causes redness, find a brand formulated for sensitive skin. Protect your lips, too, with a lip balm sunscreen of SPF 15 or higher. Reapply all sunscreen often-even those that are waterproof. And remember: Even with sunscreen, your skin will absorb some ultraviolet radiation.

  2. Limit your sun exposure
Stay out of the direct midday sun - from 10 to 3 - when UVB rays are strongest. When you are outside, try to stay in the shade. Watch out for solar rays reflecting off water, sand, snow, or pavement. Avoid tanning salons, and be careful when driving and when working near windows. UVA rays penetrate glass!

  3. Cover up
Wear a hat and long-sleeved clothing when outdoors. Try to wear a T-shirt when swimming. And don't be fooled, rays penetrate water and wet, white clothing. Protect your eyes with sunglasses. Look for a pair tinted yellow, brown, or amber. They block out blue light along with all UV rays.
